Dear Glen Morris United Church,
As many of you have heard by now, this summer I will be away on a sabbatical. Starting June 15th, I will be away for three months dedicated to restoration and exploration. This time gives me an opportunity to pause and reflect on my ministry, pay attention to where I’m needing to nourish myself spiritually, so that I can continue to serve the church in ways that are creative, sustainable, and to the best of my ability. I’m having a hard time imagining all that I might miss out on being away for such a long period of time after being part of your daily lives for years but I feel confident that the community is prepared for this season while I’m away.
During my sabbatical I will continue to develop my thoughts and passion for land-based skills, rural life, and spirituality. So much of the Bible relies on a knowledge of agrarian society using images and metaphors associated with farming, shepherding, and fishing. I’m interested in how our faith might be informed and deepened by paying attention to these elements of scripture. I’m also passionate about honouring the ways in which those who live closest to the land are already theological experts from their own lived experience and wisdom.
So, it looks to be a wonderful summer continuing to deepen connections with people, places, and practices that will inspire me. And I promise to take a moment or two to rest as well.
For now, we still have two more Sundays to enjoy together including Pride this week, and a Grand River Collaboration Picnic the next. Please don’t hesitate to reach out over the next couple of weeks if you have any questions or conversations you’d like to have before the sabbatical starts!
Yours in Christ,
Rev Michiko
