Peace be with you Glen Morris United Church,

This past weekend I celebrated my 5 year anniversary as an ordained minister in The United Church of Canada! Honestly, I can’t believe how fast time has flown by. Half a decade ago, we were in the height of managing COVID19 through lockdowns. My ordination date was postponed and only later rescheduled as a socially distanced gathering with very few people invited. Already, it’s hard to imagine my ministry started with zoom worship, pastoral care visits by phone only, outdoor gatherings, and so many home-made youtube videos.

I wanted to take this moment to say a special thank you to this community of faith who has been so supportive and instrumental in  my becoming established as a minister. You hired me when I was a new graduate and I am endlessly grateful to be in ministry and for the ongoing ways you have supported my ministry within the Glen Morris community and beyond.

When I entered into seminary, I was cautioned (too many times) that I was starting a career with a dying church. People wondered why I would want to be a minister in a world where religion seemed less and less relevant to many. Just as the post-Holocaust era felt like a time of theological unravelling, we are also making sense of the challenges of this era: the legacy of the Doctrine of Discovery and other colonial theologies. So no, it is not an “easy” time to be a minister but these past five years have shown me just how important and necessary the church remains today. I’m grateful to serve and excited for the future!

Yours in Christ,

Rev Michiko
