Dear Glen Morris United Church,
What a privilege it is to journey and what a joy it is to come home. I’ve missed you dearly and hope there were bright sunbeams and warm drinks keeping you cosy while I was on vacation and study leave.
My time in Cancun brought some much desired sunshine and an opportunity to practice my minimal Spanish. I swam in a cenote for the first time and found myself in awe of the endless beauty that can be found in Creation. While in Mexico I travelled to see a UNESCO World Heritage site called Chichen Itza, a place built by the Mayans over 1000 years ago. I’m grateful that my tour guide made a point to explain that Mayan people and their culture are very much alive today. During our tour we learned about Mayan cultural practices from the past but also met Mayan people who shared their language that is still spoken today. In fact, there are over 120 Indigenous languages spoken in Mexico!
Then it was time to fly back home in time to experience a snowstorm! I shoveled snow in between packing for another trip - this time to Vancouver. While it was raining the whole time I was there, the rain paused long enough for me to join the crowd outside of Hootsuite’s head office who wanted to let their CEO know they don’t approve of the company’s support of the US’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
The main purpose of my time in BC was to film an interview to be used in a resource by Trans Care BC that focuses on the intersections of gender identity and religion. I feel very honoured to have been part of the project and look forward to sharing the resources when they are available.
I’ve returned to a beautiful week of sunshine, magical frosty mornings, and the delight of deer tracks across the yard. It’s good to be home and I look forward to joining you again in worship this Sunday.
Yours in Christ,
Rev Michiko
